Founded in 2008, aklala batik is a group of female artisans in Togo that have transformed time honored, handcrafted techniques of fabric dying from Ghana, Togo, and Benin into modern styles of unique accessories. They stamp and paint cotton with wax, then plunge the fabric into dye baths to create vivid color combinations. The fabric is cut and sewn into bags, apparel and other creations. Hand-carved wooden rings and traditional clay beads adorn the bags. Each item they create is a one of a kind work of art.
